Rabbit Class butterflies!

The caterpillars are sitting on my mantlepiece. This will be their home until they become chrysalids.

Day 1. Can you see how much bigger they are already? Can you see the silk they are already spinning?

Day 2. Not very wriggly today but what a lot of silk!

Day 2. Two caterpillars are up on the lid - I wonder if they'll stay there now?

Day 3. In the sunshine. Moving around a LOT!

Day 4. Close up to show you how hairy they are and the colours they have.

Day 5. Hanging from the top by a thread of silk - and maybe trying to spell something?

Day 6. Holding them in my hand to give you an idea of how BIG they've got!

Day 7. They are standing up to say hello!

Day 9. Still in the same place on my shelf...but what is this? Let's look closer...

Day 9. We have a chrysalis beginning! The caterpillars have been hanging from the top of the pot, with no wriggling, for a whole day and the one on the right has started to change!

Day 10 - 3 chrysalids now, and 2 more resting on the bottom of the pot. They now need to be left for a couple of days so that their protective layer can harden...then I will move them into their net!

Day 11 - we are ready to move the chrysalids over!

Day 11 - we took the lid off of the pot and fixed it into the little stand. This is now in the net. There is one chrysalid on the tissue who did not attach to the lid.
Day 11. Click the link above for a quick video clip! The chrysalids wriggle when the caterpillar inside want to warn people not to come too close!

Day 11 - a new home high up on a shelf away from my two cats! We now have to wait 7-12 days. The caterpillars are very busy changing into butterflies. We have to watch out for them becoming darker in colour.

Day 13 - do they look any darker yet?

Day 19 - quick peek inside the net - looking a bit darker...no movement but they have been like this for 8 days now, so we have a few more days to wait before they are due to emerge.

Day 20 - 10:00am DEFINITELY darker this morning AND can you see the wings inside the chrysalids? Look carefully!

Day 20 - 10:25am I just put the previous photo up, went back to the net and LOOK! An empty chrysalid!

Day 20 - 10:25am Our first butterfly is out!
Day 20. Click the link above for a quick video clip! Our first butterfly stretching it's feeding tubes!

Day 20 - Can you count how many wings? I can see 4. Beautiful colours in there!
Day 20. 11:30am Click the link above for a quick video clip! Butterfly number two is just out, it's wings are a bit crumpled!

Day 20 - 12:30pm I have put some food in for the two who are out - apple pieces and nectar from the blossom - they like to drink sweet juices.

Day 20 - 2:15pm We now have three! Just one more to go... Can you see the empty chrysalid shells? And the dark chrysalid we are still waiting for?
Day 20. 2:30pm Click the link above for a quick video clip! Three butterflies enjoying some sunshine and food.

Day 20 - 4:15pm The last one is here! It has just come out of it's chrysalid shell. They all split their shells and crawled out head first, then turned around and held onto the lid of the pot.
Day 20. 4:15pm Click the link above for a quick video clip! We have been waiting ALL day to be able to actually see this happen - the butterfly coming out of the chrysalid!

Day 20 - 4:30pm Our last butterfly. Look how crumpled it's wings are after being curled up inside that little shell. They will soon stretch out.

Day 20 - One final picture for today - Here are the butterflies next to a £1 coin so that you can compare their actual size.

Day 21 - Good morning! Back up on a high shelf today. All 4 are there, one has it's wings closed. Can you spot them all? They need to feed and rest for another day before we can release them.
Butterfly release.
The day has finally come. It is day 22 and our butterflies are ready to be released into the garden. Mrs Powlesland has really enjoyed looking after them for Rabbit Class and she hopes that you have all enjoyed seeing their progress! Scroll down to see the butterflies take their first flights off for new adventures!
Warming their wings in the sun - they need to do this before we let them go, just like you warm up for P.E.!

Can you see it?

A bit closer...high up in our pear tree.

A close up of butterfly 4 resting in our garden.

We very gently lifted it up to put it onto some flowers.

Time to fly, little butterfly!
Our class.

Rabbit Class have had an amazing start to Year 1. We have been learning to be a new team, working together to support each other to be the best person we can be.

We started our topic off with a bus trip around our local area. The children thoroughly enjoyed this and decided to make our role play area into a tour bus.

Learning to ask and answer questions - what would Guy Fawkes say if he was questioned about the 5th of November?

We really enjoy using the maths table and sharing our knowledge with our friends. There are always resources linked to our learning to help us!

Making decisions in December just like our adults - voting in class.
